Multiple Teams · Football: Three Rivers 21 Edwardsburg 18; Cats snap Eddies win streak, clinch playoff spot


Football defeated previously unbeaten Edwardsburg tonight 21-18 at Armstrong Field and a share of first place in the Wolverine Conference at 6-1 while also clinching a spot in the MHSAA playoffs.

Edwardsburg open the scoring before the Cats took a 7-6 lead on a Bryce Morlan 2 yard touchdown reception from Jalen Heivilin. The Eddies took the lead again in the third quarter before the Cats answered on a Heivilin 7 yard run for a 14-12 lead. Edwardsburg again answered to take a 18-14 lead until just over four minutes left in the game, Heivilin completed a 9 yard touchdown pass to Gavin Charvat for a 21-18 lead. The Cats defense was huge all evening against the Division III 3rd-ranked Eddies and on 4th and 2 came up with a stop and another one on the final play of the game to snap the Eddies 30 game regular season (34 including playoffs) Wolverine Conference win streak.

Heivilin finished with 199 yards passing and two touchdowns in wet conditions, Charvat caught a season high 8 passes for 90 yards. The Cats finished with 222 yards of offense (23 rushing/199 passing) while Edwardsburg had 321 yards (302 rushing/19 passing).

The Cats were led by Tyler Moore with 13 tackles tonight, Chris Morrill had 12 and Traven Van Oss added 11.
